Definition: Immunotherapy is a form of allergy treatment involving injections of purified substances to which a particular person is allergic, including pollens, house dust mites, fungi, and stinging insect venom. The treatment involves giving gradually increasing doses of the allergens, inducing production of non-allergic, or "blocking" antibodies against the allergens, thereby reducing the production of IgE and thus the allergic process when the substances are encountered in the future.
Also Known As: allergy shots
