Definition: Mast cells are allergic cells present in the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, lungs and in the skin. In an allergic response, an allergen stimulates the release of IgE antibodies, which attach themselves to mast cells. Following subsequent allergen exposure and IgE binding, the mast cells release substances such as histamine (a chemical responsible for allergic symptoms) into the body.
